This tutorial explains how to design a navigation bar with tabs using CSS and sliding doors effect. I also used a single background image for the status of each tab (link, hover, active) changing only the position property for the CSS background attribute and some lines of PHP code to set a tab "active" when is defined an URL Variable related to the "current" page.
