Photomontage as a Fantastic Cut and Paste Technique

Let’s keep rolling out the interesting and informative content. This time we’ll concentrate on photomontage that is associated with a range of individual photos combined together to create a new subject or visual image. This technique produces a single photographic picture from multiple negatives, scans, or layers with the main concept to have multiple modes within a single seamless frame. For that purpose, the composite picture is sometimes photographed so that the final image is converted back into a seamless photographic print.

Basically, the technique of making a picture by assembling pieces of photographs had a history going back to the invention of photography in the mid 19th century. Among the first were Victorians who discovered the amusement of the wrong elements stuck on a different pieces. But what’s truly exciting that the term itself was coined only at the end of the First World War, around 1918 or 1919, by Berlin Dadaists. Looking for a new means of expression, they drifted into meaningful abstraction and contrived a powerful tool to protest the war. Afterward, the technique was inherited and vastly used by European Surrealists, then in the 1920′s and 1930′s for political propaganda, humorous postcards, image experimentation. The next great revival in the use of montage was connected with anti-nuclear movement of the 1980s, and then with Pop Art movement that emerged with the outbreak of post-modernism. Actually, the trend continues to this day, having become a popular method in public communication and being widely adopted by advertisers.

With this post we present you the collection of spectacular and sometimes even odd-and-queer examples of photomontage, though all being quite artfully interleaved.
