Elaborate Pin & Thread Art by Debbie Smyth

Drawing in thread is something very delicate to reproduce. It always challenges people to ask themselves ‘how it is being done?’ Today we’ll try to show you by example of Debbie Smyth – the British artist most identifiable by her intriguing thread drawings. Debbie manages to capture the charm of mundane scenes and bring them to life with simple materials – pins & threads. Working on flat surface, she plots out the design with hundreds of thin pins on a canvas and then fills them with threads to create spectacular pictures that float off the surface. Such elaborate drawings resemble of pencil sketches, yet appear very soft and dreamy contrasting with sharp angles. Basically, this is the old pin-and-thread technique that has been made more contemporary with an original approach of Debbie’s. Close to the end of the showcase you’ll see an interview with this skillful textile master and a short time-lapse of one of her creations. We invite you to browse!
